Roast Profile

The Matas de Minas region has a history deeply intertwined with coffee cultivation, which has shaped its economy, culture, and landscape. Since the XIX century, coffee production has established itself as one of the region’s main activities, standing out for its quality and commitment to sustainability. The climate and terrain of the region have proven ideal for coffee growing, especially on small family farms that settled there. Unlike the large slave-based plantations of the colonial period, coffee farming in Matas de Minas flourished through the dedication of small producers, fostering a more diverse and resilient agricultural structure.

Despite the challenges posed by limited investment in mechanization and infrastructure, coffee farming in the region has remained predominantly manual, with selective harvesting and meticulous management. What might have been seen as a limitation turned into a distinguishing factor: this artisanal care has contributed to the exceptional quality of the beans produced.

From the 2000s onward, Matas de Minas coffee began gaining international recognition, driven by the growing appreciation for specialty coffees and sustainable production. Today, the region is a benchmark in this segment, standing out in national and international competitions. Its commitment to sustainability is reflected in investments in certifications, good agricultural practices, and the appreciation of local labor. Grown at altitudes between 600 and 1,600 meters, under a mild climate and with selective harvesting, Matas de Minas coffee is distinguished by its complexity of flavors and striking sensory notes. The history of coffee in the region is a testament to resilience, tradition, and innovation. What began as a modest agricultural activity has become one of the pillars of the Minas Gerais economy, placing Matas de Minas on the global map of high-quality coffees.

This lot is a blend of coffees cultivated and produced by Small Holder Families in Matas de Minas Mountain Range in Minas Gerais Region selected and distributed to Azura by our local partners - Coffee for You Brazil (C4U).
